We met a shepherd multiple times and it was a calm and peaceful encounter.
Less pleasant was a meeting an aggressive dog. His owner appeared after a while and called him back, but for a while we were on our own. We've heard that the dog owners learned to expect a cigarette for this, so we had some. Not sure if it was just a myth or if it was still common there.
What's nearby:
There are several weird-looking shelters throughout the mountain range, but they have limited capacity and varying quality.
There are new shelters: New Refugiul Călțun & Refugiul Scara. Especially the Călțun has very decent architecture. (Photo by Dan Purice ©)
You need a tent anyway, so consider shelters just a bonus.
Train to the city, then town, taxi to the village, then a horse carriage, bike with a propane-butane bomb, and the last mile on a circular saw.
Just kidding:) The circular saw was just workers commuting to work. But it was funny anyway seeing them ride the saw.
We actually used just a train and taxi.
We wanted a milk. But the shop in the village didn't have any.
They directed us to a grandmother around the corner.
We searched for a while, and finally found her!
„Domluvili jsme se rukama nohama:)“
Mission milk accomplished!
Shepherd's Dog
The trail passes from a forest to open meadows with first views, then crosses the Transfăgărășan highway with a restaurant and accommodation, later to get rockier with occasionally exposed sections.
There two highest Romanian mountains on the way, Moldoveanu (2544 m) and Negoiu (2535 m).
