From Forest to Meadows
Făgăraș Hills, 2 days
26.3 km 2300 m up over 2511 m 1950 m down
Passing a Refugiul Fereastra Mică & Refugiul Viștea Mare shelters.
The spring near Refugiul Viștea Mare has dried up. The closest water is 100 vertical meters down at the lake.
Ascent to the highest peak of Romania, Moldoveanu (2544 m) with the first more rocky parts. Not that difficult, just using hands while climbing up.
Passing a small lake Podu Giurgiului.
The hilly ridge then reaches lake Capra right above the tunnel of the Transfăgărășan highway, through which runs one of the most beautiful mountain roads in the world.
There is a restaurant and accommodation down in the Transfăgărășan saddle. And even decades ago there were stalls selling some basic stuff. It's almost a 300 m descent.

Rocky & Rockier, 2 days
15 km 1350 m up over 2519 m 1650 m down
From the Transfăgărășan highway further, the peaks are rockier soon with occasionally a bit more exposed parts, some secured by iron ropes. Most of the trail is still just a touristic route, but there are climbing parts on it as well.
Passing Refugiul Călțun.
The section from the Șaua Cleopatrei saddle to the Șerbota peak (2331 m) has the most climbing parts.
There is a steep 2 km climb and descent between rocks occasionally secured by iron ropes. Not dangerous, but a heavy backpack is quite a burden here.
Ascent to the second highest peak in Romania, Negoiu (2535 m).
Refugiul Scara shelter and Lacul Avrig
Village Descent
21.4 km 400 m up over 2328 m 2000 m down
The most practical descent is from a Saua Corbului pass through a forest down to a train in Turnu Roșu village.
The train to Zărnești from Brașov runs only during the day. There are also buses in the morning and evening. Schedules are on Google maps.
Cabana Plaiul Foii is another 11 km on asphalt. Alternatively, you can take a taxi.
Alternatively, you can take the longer part, climbing over La Om right from Zărnești.
The train back from Turnu Roșu goes directly to Sibiu, where it is possible to change to the international express.
When using a car, an (electronic) highway toll needs to be paid.

Getting there and back
The tourist path is well marked, well-trodden and easy to follow.
We had no GPS decades ago, so the tracks provided lack timing.
Mapy.cz is perfect for navigation there.
There are several water sources on the trail, but sometimes the springs are just dripping or completely dry, so it's worth planning ahead to have alternatives, or you might need to descend for the water from the ridge. It's better to avoid getting water from lakes, except for an emergency.
There are many bears in the area. The main problem is around Trans-Făgărașan where tourists started to feed them from cars and they łost their natural shyness and sometimes can get aggressive. Do not feed bears and try to avoid them. Don't leave food in the tent, but hang it on a tree.
