The Wave

Cotton Teepees (Coyote Buttes South)

0.5 h: 1.5 km 16 m up over 1779 m 16 m down

As spectacular as the Wave.

Tougher 4WD than just a SUV is recommended, because of sandy road. The road to the trailhead is narrower and harder to pass than the main road to the Wave.

Coyote Buttes South

The Wave

3 h: 9.1 km 324 m up over 1609 m 324 m down

The walk is easy, but the extreme temperatures in summer are dangerous.

Take at least 2 gallons of water and GPS.

During a normal condition a standard car or SUV is OK to get to the place, but when roads get wet and muddy it's safer to take a proper 4WD.

Permit is needed

Apply online or on premise to a permit lotery. Note there's a quite low chance of winning the permit. Only minority of people get it: by drawing lots. The lots can be bought online in advance or early morning at the information office.

In the winter the chance is a bit higher.

May to October are the most bussy/crowded months.

Limiting the visitor counts is an attempt to prottect the area. There are big fines for accessing without the permit. Rangers watch the area.

Extreme temperatures

There are tripple digits in Fahrenheit (37 °C or more) during the summer and no shade

Two gallons of water recommended. You will get thirsty and dehydrated very quickly.

GPS is recommended.

No GSM signal in the area.
