Terrain and difficulty

The western part of the ridge is pretty exposed with steep climbs, which makes it often very windy. Check the alerts at the mountain service..

We had such windy weather that we had to pause for the biggest wind gusts to pass several times.

There is typically no lavine terrain there, but take a look just to verify it.

You need at least spikes or crampons, preferably both, depending on conditions. Spikes are suitable for most of the terrain, but crampons come in handy in the top parts. Snow gaiters are helpful in fresh snow.

The hardest, more technical parts (Rozsutec and Biele skaly) can be skipped or bypassed.

There is estimated to be a couple of tens of bears living in the Malá Fatra, typically at altitudes of 600-1500 m.

Transportation

A night train with sleeper cars to Žilina makes it accessible from the west.

A good public transportation is system all around the ridge, with multiple options to start and many options to descend if you don't have time or weather to pass it whole. Schedules at UBIAN.
