Misty Meadows (sometimes)
An e-bike is the best way to explore the area and around. Even a bike is great, but e-bike allow to go fast and try to catch the sunrise on the Belvedere even when sleeping down.
Bike rentals are both in Compatsch and in the valley.
Bikes are forbidden on some paths near the most crowded viewpoints, but strangely enough, the signs were sometimes from just one side and not the other, so I am not sure how seriously they mean it. Be respectful to people strolling there anyway.
The e-bike range is okay for a day trip. You can get a charger with the bike.
There is a schematic map with suggested trails available in the info office.
Biking around
Despite being such a touristic place, I must admit that the sunrise and sunset are really worth seeing here.
There is a higher chance of experiencing mists in the autumn or spring. We saw quite a misty morning there from the opposite side from the Rifugio Vicenza in Langkofel, but we weren't that lucky on our visit. Even when lucky, the mists last only around an hour after the sunrise before they dissipate.
The Belvedere viewpoint is really the most photogenic spot in the area. Walking down across the meadows (where allowed) in the morning sun is an enjoyable experience.

Car access control
The road to Compatch is closed 9-17h, except for the off-season (middle of Apr – middle of May & beginning of Nov – beginning of Dec). During this time, only lifts and buses or accomodated can pass. On busy days, the road closes even earlier, when parking lots get full.
Cars are forbidden beyond Compatsch completely, except for accomodated. The police checks it.
Parking
Spitzbühl lift midway: €26.5 together with the lift ticket. It's not allowed to park there overnight until 6:00.
Compatsch: €13. The parking fee in Compatch is collected by humans. In the late afternoon, they might sometimes leave it unattended.
Punky alternative powered by an e-bike
An adventurous option is to overnight a little bit further down in the valley and e-bike up. The lift and bus don't go early enough to manage to get there before the sunrise, walking is slow and biking not much faster because of the elevation gain, so the e-bike is really the best option if you don't have an accommodation in the controlled area.
